Center Events Bring Scholars, Collaborators, and Guests to UF

  • The Center’s Annual “Fall Reception” was held on September 12th. Center Affiliate faculty member, Dr. Sheila K. Dickison, of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, gave the keynote address, and was named the “Uppity Woman Award” recipient and Dr. Patricia Hilliard-Nunn, of the African American Studies Program, as awarded the Distinguished Affiliate Contribution Award.
  • “Gainesville Girlhoods: A conversation on GirlCentered Community Engagement” was held on November 4th. The event featured local community organizations engaging in gender-specific educational, creative and enrichment projects. The panel was moderated by Dr. Jillian Hernandez and the Center event was co-sponsored by the Waldo W. Neikirk Term Professorship held by Dr. Trysh Travis.
  • An Edna Saffy Public Lecture, “Women on the Front Lines: Lebanon Today,” a talk by Dr. Elise Salem was held on November 20th in Ustler Hall. Dr. Salem shared challenges and opportunities of living and working in Lebanon, during the recent revolution

  • Third Annual Diversity Graduate Research Symposium sponsored by the Black Graduate Student Organization (BGSO).
  • Lecture Series: “Contestations: Rethinking the Public Sphere for the Twenty-first Century,” sponsored by the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere.
  • “Evolve or Die: Redefining Jewish Literature for the 21st Century,” A talk by Myla Goldberg, sponsored by the the Shorestein Professorship in American Jewish Culture and Society.
  • “What are They Working On? Meet your New Colleagues in the Humanities,” sponsored by the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere.
  • This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart, a visit by Canadian ecologist and poet Madhur Anand, sponsored by Imagining Climate Change.
  • “Culture and Conflict in Palestine/Israel: An International Conference,” sponsored by the Center for Global Islamic Studies.
  • Film Screening, “Women of the Gulag,” sponsored by the Russian Studies Funds and the Center for European Studies.
  • “Beyond Borders, Across Boundaries: Black and LatinX Knowledge Formation” Speaker Series, presented by the Mellon Intersections Group on Global Blackness and LatinX Identity with support from the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere. Center faculty member Dr. Manoucheka Celeste is the convener.
  • “MLK Celebration,” including Opening Ceremony, MLK Gala, and MLK Day of Service, co-sponsored by Multicultural and Diversity Affairs, Black Graduate Student Organization, and the Brown Center for Leadership and Service.
  • “Verano Intenso: A Summer of Political Discontent and Sctivism in Puerto Rico,” sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies.
  • “Redefining Masculinity: A Non-Toxic Conversation,” sponsored by the Women’s Student Association.
  • “Evening with Industry” (multiple job fairs), sponsored by the UF Society of Women Engineers.
  • “Pride Awareness Month” and “PAM Opening Ceremony,” sponsored by UF Multicultural and Diversity Affairs and Pride Student Union.
  • “UN’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science,” sponsored by UF’s Physics Department (and many other UF departments).
  • “Decarcerating Disability: Deinstitutionalization and Prison Abolition,” sponsored by the Center for Humanities and the Public Sphere, and the Disability Resource Center.
