UF Classics professor elected president of classical society
Victoria Pagán, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Classics and the University of Florida’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been elected president of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS). Established in 1869 as the principal membership organization for Classics in North America, the SCS has over 3,000 members. Pagán will take office as president elect in January 2026.
Pagán has been a member of the UF faculty since 2005 and is an active scholar, teacher and leader. Her research interests include Latin literature, Roman historiography, gardens in literature and conspiracy theory.
Pagán is the editor of The Tacitus Encyclopedia, the first in-depth English-language reference work dedicated to the Roman historian Tacitus. She is author of several books including “Conspiracy Narratives in Roman History” (University of Texas Press, 2004), “Conspiracy Theory in Latin Literature” (University of Texas Press, 2012), “Rome and the Literature of Gardens” (Bloomsbury, 2006), and “Tacitus” (Bloomsbury, 2017). Her most recent work is “Women and the Collaborative Art of Gardens: From Antiquity to the Present” (Routledge, 2024), co-edited with Judith Page.
At UF, she has held roles such as department chair, graduate coordinator, and currently undergraduate coordinator and has served on numerous professional committees. Pagán also serves as co-chair of the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee. In recognition of her teaching and scholarship, Pagán was named UF’s 2024-2025 Teacher/Scholar of the Year.
Her election to the presidency of SCS highlights her standing in the classical community and underscores UF’s role as a hub for excellence in classical studies and the humanities.
“I’m honored to serve the profession and proud to represent the University of Florida, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Classics and the Center for Greek Studies,” Pagán said.
