UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Tops $57 Million in 2022 Research Spending

College’s research contributes to a record $1 billion for the University of Florida

The University of Florida College of Liberal Arts and Sciences spent more than $57 million on research in 2022, adding to a record year for the university as a whole.

In a historic demonstration of the institution’s research prowess, UF exceeded $1 billion in research expenditures for the first time in the fiscal year ending June 30. The $1.067 billion in spending places UF among 15 public universities across the country to exceed the 10-digit mark.

The $57.9 million contributed by CLAS furthered a wide variety of research spanning the college’s departments, including work on the Mars Perseverance rover, gravitational waves and black holes, sustainable plastics and the impacts of climate change on plants and animals.

The spending data is drawn from UF’s response to the National Science Foundation’s annual Higher Education Research and Development Survey (HERD), which gathers comparable numbers from universities nationwide.

“Surpassing the $1 billion research milestone reflects UF’s continued rise as one of the leading research universities in the United States,” UF Vice President for Research David Norton said in a university statement. “But this number represents far more than dollars – it represents the value of these researchers’ remarkable intellect and talent and its impact on our state, our nation and the world.”
